Fognini waits six years to beat Murray again

Fabio Fognini waited six years to repeat a win over Andy Murray as the Italian dealt the Scot out in the first round of the Rome Masters on Wednesday.

Fognini ended with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win after also defeating Murray here in 2017 when the visitor stood atop the world rankings.

Fognini was playing this week on a wild card as he won only his second match from 10 played this season; he has now defeated Murray in all three of their matches played in Italy.

Murray came to Rome rising high after winning a clay Challenger title in France but was unable to carry forward with his momentum.

The No. 130th-ranked Fognini needed almost three hours to advance at home and improve his record in Rome to 14-15.

Murray had his chances with a 5-1 margin in the second set to square the match before his opponent regained control to run out the winner and earn a second-round spot.
