Beatriz Hadda Maia made history for Brazil on Wednesday as she took down seventh seed Ons Jabeur 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 to book a surprise semi-final at the French Open.
The 14th seed spent two and a half hours in constructing her upset over Tunisia’s two-time Grand Slam finalist.
She is the first Brazilian to reach the semis here in the post-1968 Open era.
“This is what we work for all year long,” the winner said. “I had to be patient, playing Ons is difficult, she’s one of the best in the world.
“I’m very happy and proud of myself and my team today.
“I had to work to keep my rhythm in a long match, But I always believe in my body and my game.”
The pair produced a total of 28 break points, with only 10 converted.
Haddad Maia was coming off a nearly four-hour match in the previous round.
The 27-year-old South American had never advanced beyond the second round in 11 previous Grand Slam main draws and had lost four sets against Jabeur previously.
The upset of Jabeur gave Haddad Maia a ninth defeat of a Top 10 opponent and her first at a major.
She will wait for an opponent as top-seeded holder Iga Swiatek plays Coco Gauff.
