Battle of the Brits

Dan Evans reconfirmed  his British number 1 ranking with a feisty win over the strong starting three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray in the semi-final of the Schroders “Battle of the Brits” exhibition tournament.

World number 28 Evans was overwhelmed by Murray in the first set, losing it 6-1 before taking the second 6-3, then nosing ahead 10-8 on the line in the topsy-turvy tiebreaker third to maintain his unbeaten run

He will meet British number 2 Kyle Edmund, who also came back from losing the first set, in Sunday’s final .

Cameron Norrie took the first set off Edmund in a tie break, but went down 10-8 in the third.

Although classified as an Exhibition tournament the standard of play has been high and given the British ATP contingent much needed competition whilst the professional tour has been in lockdown for three months due to the covid -19 pandemic.

For former World number 1 Andy Murray, the event has provided much needed match practice, coming through four matches in five days following surgery for as pelvic injury stating after the match that it “was his best set of tennis for a long time”
