ATP faces up to stranded player dilemma

With more than 40 people among players and support staff arranged in Dubai, the ATP on Monday finally addressed the situation which has wreaked havoc with international travel in the war-plagued Gulf area.

Tournament champion Daniil Medvedev and his family are among those still staying at the 5-star player hotel at the tournament’s Aviation club site.

Also in the city popular as a training  hub for players is Holger Rune, rehabbing an ankle injury from late last season.

With airports in the region al closed due to danger from  flying drones and missiles from nearby Iran, travel planning for tennis and non-tennis figures alike is halted.

The ATP like every other body in the Gulf has no idea when air travel will resume.

The men’s sanctioning body met in a crisis meeting on Monday, issuing the following statement.

“The ATP is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East and remains in regular contact with our players, their support teams and the relevant local authorities.

“The health, safety and well-being of our players, staff and tournament personnel are our priority . We can confirm that a small number of players and team members have remained in Dubai following the conclusion of the recent ATP 500 event.

“Players and their teams are being accommodated in official tournament hotels , where all their immediate needs are being met. We are in direct contact with those involved, as well as with tournament organisers and safety advisors.

“At this stage, travel arrangements remain subject to ongoing evaluation in line with airline operations and official guidance. We will continue to provide appropriate support to ensure that players and their teams can depart safely when conditions allow.

“We will continue to assess developments and provide updates as necessary.”
