Angry Medvedev gives racquet-smash masterclass

Daniil Medvedev suffered a 6-0, 6-0 humiliation on Wednesday and reduced a racquet to splinter as he took out his frustration at the Monte Carlo Masters.

The February Dubai champion went on his destructive rampage trailing a set to 2-0 to Italian Matteo Berrettini, who eventually handed 10th seed Medvedev the first “double bagel” of his career.

Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist who has been troubled for the past few seasons with various injuries and now ranks 90th, reached the third round in 49 minutes.

“It was one of the best performances of my life. I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil,” Berrettini said.

“The game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.”

The 29-year-old wid card has had minimal time on court so far, after advancing on Tuesday in a walkover after four games against Roberto Bautista Agut.

“I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing,” Berrettini said.

The one-time ATP No. 6 will face a stern test against Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca, who defeated France’s Arthur Rinderknech 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Medvedev went down on the back of 27 unforced errors in the worst defeat of his career after coming to the court with a 3- lead over Berrettini in their career series.
