Carlos Alcaraz charged into the first grass court quarter-final of his career on Thursday as the Spaniard defeated Czech Jiri Lehecka 6-2, 6-3 at Queen’s club.
The world No. 2 who is making his debut at the west London Wimbledon tune-up overcame a hefty total of 20 unforced errors – the same as his Czech No. 1 opponent.
But Alcaraz held steady to move into the 25th quarter-final of his young career after 85 minutes.
“:I’m really happy with the level I played today,” the winner said. “He’s a tough opponent and has a great game on grass.
“I’m happy I had a very solid match, I’m happy with my first quarter-final here in Queen’s.”
Alcaraz was playing only his eighth match on grass and now stands 6-2 on the unfamiliar surface.
The 20-year-old escaped some minor danger, saving three break points while leading a set and 3-1.
Alcaraz can take back the top ATP ranking from Novak Djokovic if he claims the trophy here on Sunday.
